We are pleased to announce that, because of you, the MHSA has not only met the matching grant challenge but exceeded it by $2,018! The MHSA raised $4,518, with the matching grant, that’s $7,018!

What your donations purchase:

Technology to keep the students competitive:

TI-SmartView - The teacher projects an interactive representation of a TI-84 Plus calculator to the entire class;

Wacom Bamboo Capture Tablet – Instructors use the pen directly on screen to present to a group or collaborate with others in the most effective manner possible

Pro-Quest on-line research database

Practical educational opportunities:

Ivy League Model United Nation fees – Students will have an opportunity debate traditional global issues in a larger forum; address the topics involving piracy and political terrorism; or act as heads of state to debate the issues of technological collaboration at the regional level and the development of African civil society.

Math Forum – An online resource useful for improving math learning, teaching, and communication.

General Supplies:

Science supplies and hundreds of books on grammar, history, science, etc.

Health supplies and workshops

Teachers are encouraged to identify technology and opportunities to enhance the educational experience at Masterman. The MHSA, through your donations, provides the much needed support to enable the teachers to accomplish their goals.
The generous and immediate response to this mid-year fundraising challenge has been phenomenal. The Home and School Association, a 501c3 volunteer-run organization, is able to receive donations at any time, and apply those donations directly to our students' experience at Masterman School.

Thank you.

White and Williams invests in Community by Adopting J.R. Masterman School

Philadelphia – White and Williams LLP, a Philadelphia-based law firm, is giving back and investing in its community by adopting J.R. Masterman School on March 2, 2012. By “adopting” Masterman, the firm and its employees will invest time, finances and resources to the 1,150 students currently enrolled at the school.

“Philadelphia schools are facing sharp declines in funding forcing local schools to reduce staff and services,” said Guy Cellucci, Managing Partner of White and Williams. “By adopting Masterman, we are investing, not only in our community, but future leaders. It’s a great feeling knowing that this ‘adoption’ will allow a successful area school to continue to inspire and educate its students.”

Marjorie Neff, Principal of Masterman High School adds, “Masterman has a great track record and White and Williams is helping to ensure the school continues on a thriving path. We are proud to have White and Williams as our ‘foster parent.’”

White and Williams and Masterman will kick off the adoption at 2:30pm with a $10,000 check presentation for staff grants. The money will, among other things, allow staff members to purchase supplies needed to teach their students.

Members of the firm will also be on hand to unveil some of the key initiatives White and Williams has in store for students and faculty, including support of the school play, partaking in the school’s annual “Clean up Day,” and college scholarships for three students – one minority, one female and one commendable student.

Additionally, due to the close proximity of White and Williams and Masterman – eight blocks – there will also be numerous mini activities scheduled throughout the year including mentoring days and participation in the school’s Career Day.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who donated their gently used (and even some new) copies of Pendragon, Harry Potter, Sisters Grimm, Rick Riordan books, P.C. Cast books, etc. Your generosity overwhelms me. It feels very good to be able to tell a patron, 'Yes, we do have number 8 of that series!' Some of you, I was able to thank face to face or thank your child (I think it's a big deal that a child will give up part of his/her book collection); some of you have slipped in your donation and some of you have mailed it anonymously.  Our students are voracious readers. In an age that has many electronic distractions, they look forward to hunkering down with the printed page. Thank you for helping to satisfy their literary appetites!"

What won't be cut?
How can the Home and School Association help?
How can you help?

Please attend a special meeting to address these concerns:
Thursday, December 15, 7:00 in the school library.

Principal Marge Neff will review the budget with parents and take questions.

Change in H&S Constitution Requires Parents to Vote!

posted Dec 14, 2011 8:18 AM by Jacob Panik   [ updated Dec 14, 2011 11:51 AM ]

The Philadelphia Home and School Council is beginning the process of electing new officers.   Home and Schools who want to have a vote in this process must submit their dues of $150 along with their member application by January 2nd, 2012. http://www.philahsc.org/forms/general-membership-september-11

To begin this process, we have proposed a small, but significant change to our constitution.   Specifically, we have proposed that there should be a minimum of 2 Vice Presidents instead of 4 Vice Presidents.   The reason for the change is to prevent a delay in the election process because there is a possibility of the current council not having enough representatives qualified to become Vice Presidents and other council officers.

The vote on the constitution will take place during the next General Membership Meeting beginning on Tuesday, January 10th at 10am.  You must be present to vote.
